1/270 No. 76 (Clematis Cottage) and no. 77

Pair of attached cottages. Circa 1500 or earlier, with later extensions. Timber framed, plastered, roof mainly thatched, with some handmade red plain tiles. No. 76 comprises 3 bays facing S, 1500 or earlier, with an axial stack near the right end; C20 single-storey wing to rear, roofed with machine-made red clay tiles, and lean-to conservatory to left of it. No. 77 comprises 2 bays to right of it, slightly wider in span, mainly C19 but possibly incorporating earlier structure, with an C18/19 axial stack. One storey with attics. No. 76 has 4 C20 casements and a C19 horizontal sash of 12 lights in an eyebrow dormer; door at front of C20 gabled porch, roofed with machine-made red clay tiles. No. 77 has 3 C20 casements and one C19 horizontal sash in a gabled dormer; the dormer and adjacent part of the main roof are clad with handmade red plain tiles. C20 door. Roof half-hipped at right. No. 76 has heavy jowled posts and a crownpost roof with axial bracing. The ceilings have been raised, so that only the ground floor is occupied; the only access to the loft is through the dormer window. No. 77 has a C19 hearth facing to left, and wider wood-burning hearth facing to right; the structure is wholly plastered internally.
