Rayne Hatch Farmhouse
II
House. Circa 1570, altered in C18 and C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed
with handmade red plain tiles. 5 bays facing SE with later C16 stack to left of
centre against front wall. C19 single-storey extension of red brick to rear of
right bay. 2 storeys. Ground floor, one C19 casement with some handmade glass,
2 C20 casements. First floor, 2 C19 casements and one C20 casement. 6-panel
door, top 2 panels glazed, in C20 gabled porch. Jowled posts, heavy studding
with curved tension bracing exposed in one cross-wall. Chamfered axial beams
with short lamb's tongue stops, plain joists of horizontal section (in one bay,
with small secondary chamfers). The binding beam immediately to right of the
stack is supported on a half-height jowl of ogee profile, and itself supports
the axial beam to right, implying that the present stack is not original,
preceded by a timber-framed chimney. Large wood-burning hearth facing to right,
blocked for C20 grate, with blocked C18 grate to rear and C20 grate to left. In
the small lobby to rear of the stack, fielded pine panelling, one fielded
2-panel pine door, and recessed cupboard with fluted jambs, spheroid head and
profiled shelves, all C18. The tiebeam one bay from the left end is chamfered
with step stops. Scarf of indeterminate bladed type in rear wallplate, partly
covered. Clasped purlin roof, original but with additional softwood in most of
roof; roof of right bay rebuilt in softwood. The combination of step stops and
lamb's tongue stops, and the short curvature of the latter, together with other
constructional features, permit close dating (J. McCann, The Introduction of the
Lambs Tongue Stop - some new evidence, Historic Buildings in Essex 2, September
1985, 2-5). In 1569 the manor of Rayne Hatch passed from Edward Jackson to his
son John; the present house may date from this time. RCHM 19.
