3/103 Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin 20/11/59 I

Parish Church. Tower C13, chancel C14, remainder rebuilt c 1500. Restored and vestry added c 1875. Ironstone rubble walls. Nave and aisle roofs tiled, chancel, vestry and porch roofs slated, all with coped gables. Nave, north aisle of 4 bays, chancel with vestry on north, south porch, west tower. Tower, of 2 stages, has partly battlemented parapet with corner pinnacles. Clasping buttresses to lower stage. Small lancet windows to belfry. Lower stage has small rectangular window in north wall, and, in west wall, a trefoil-headed lancet and shallow central buttress. South wall of nave has 3 3-light windows with round-headed lights, and solid panelled tracery. Oval recess below the western window. Porch has shallow 4-centred arch with a projecting stone cross over. South wall of chancel has a 2-light C14 window and a re-set 2-light C13 window with deep cut mouldings internally. Angle buttresses to chancel. East window, c 1500 - square-headed, of 3 lights with straight-sided heads. North window, also c 1500, of 2 lights. North aisle has 2 windows matching those in south wall of nave, and doorway with 4- centred arched head. Inner door to porch has 4-centred arch and C18 panelled door. Internally, nave has unplastered waggon roof of c 1500. North arcade has composite piers and moulded caps, apparently incorporating re-used material. Brick paving - probably C18 - with some stone graveslabs. At west end of nave a canopied tomb recess with indents for vanished brasses. Fragments of late medieval stained glass in west window of aisle. Tower arch C13, with painted Royal Arms of George IV over. Several C18 hatchments. Chancel arch C13. Narrow opening in south nave wall by chancel arch - possibly doorway to Rood loft. C19 elliptical barrel ceiling to chancel. Piscina, and C15 brass, in south chancel wall. C15 octagonal font with traceried panels. Barrel organ at west end of nave. RCHM Monument 1.
