Stables. Dated 1878 on keystone of main entrance. By Sir Ernest
George for John Freeman-Mitford. Snecked, rock-faced limestone.
Concrete tile roof with limestone gable coping. Square plan with
central square courtyard. Almost symmetrical 2-storey facade.
2:2:1:2:2-windowed with principal gables projecting from facade far
right and left. Central bell/clock tower over rusticated round
arched entrance with decorative wrought iron gates. Rustication
extended left of tower around segmental headed door. Square
decorated wooden bell lantern with ogee curved pyramidal leaded
roof and weathervane with boar head decoration on roof of tower.
Elaborate shaped gable housing clock with finial at apex and eaves
parapet. 3-light, stone-mullioned casement below clock with
stilted arched heads to lights and geometric glazing, pilasters
with Tudor rose decoration to either side. Canted 4-light oriel
window below. Two 2-light stone-mullioned dormers from eaves to
either side of bell/clock tower with roundels inscribed FM
(Freeman-Mitford). Single bulls-eye windows with keystones and
decorated surrounds towards apex of principal gables. Single and
2-light, stone-mullioned casements with transoms to ground floor
and first floor. Canted 4-light bay window far left with
segmental headed single doorway right. 3 and 4 flue axial stacks
with moulded caps. Stack from left side of bell /clock also.
Courtyard within: 3 mock timber-framed gables supported on 2 round
columns opposite entrance. Highly decorated and unusually complete
example of its kind.
