Details
MINSTERWORTH CHURCH LANE SO 71 NE (south side) 5/92 Three Hawkins monuments, in churchyard, about 6m south of centre of chancel, Church of St Peter GV II Two short chest tombs, one pedestal tomb. Last quarter C18. Stone. Westernmost, Anne Hawkins, died 1776. Flat lid, moulded edge, corners slightly indented long side: north side raised square panel, scalloped corners, south raised circle, both with corner paterae. Ends pilasters, alternate fluting and paterae in capital, draped urn in sunk panel west end, raised panel east, moulded plinth. Long S to first inscription: later inscriptions. Northernmost wife of J. Hawkins, died 1780; lid as westernmost; raised rectangular panel to sides, pilaster ends, egg and dart top, raised circle to each stem, swelling centre to east, urn to west. Moulded plinth. Also commemorates J. Hawkins, died 1740; later inscriptions. Southermost pedestal tomb probably late C18; inscriptions weathered. Hexagonal; pine-cone top, acanthus leaves on cyma moulding, gadrooning; swept down to moulded edge, step, moulded edge to lid. Plain frieze; acanthus consoles to east and west, raised panels to other sides, moulded plinth. All on square of stone paving at ground level, carrying iron railings, pointed tops to bars, larger corner members with urn tops.
