Details

1. GREAT WALTHAM MASHBURY ROAD 5213 Fitzjohn's Farmhouse (Formerly listed under Pleshey) TL 61 SE 4/423 10.4.67. II*

2. A Cl5 timber-framed and plastered hall house, altered and extended in the C16. Apart from same modern additions at the rear and the restoration of the chimney stacks there has not been a great deal of subsequent alteration. The east front has projecting cross wings at the north and south ends and the addition of 2 C16 gables to the centre block. All 4 gables have the original C16 carved bargeboards and moulded pendants. 4 window range, 3 and 4 light casements. There is a late C16 door with 8 panels. On the main block, between the storeys, there is the remains of a band of ornamental plasterwork. Roof tiled, the south wing is hipped at the rear and there is a gabled dormer to the main block and a late C16 central chimney stack with group diagonal shafts. The interior has some of the original roof construction and there are save original doorways and blocked windows. There is also some C16-C17 panelling. (RCHM 25).
