- II*
Large town house, end of street row. C17. Limestone ashlar with plinth and second offset, two continuous moulded strings concrete stone slate roofs to coped gables all with diagonally set finials, but set square at each end of main front. A cross-gabled compact house with two gables to the street, and the two corresponding back gables each with five double shaft ashlar stacks with skirts and moulded Cappings between these a lesser central gable. 2½ storeys and basement, 3- windowed; in gables 2-light chamfered mullion casements under stopped drips, and behind parapet between these a C20 dormer, at first floor a 3-light double-chamfer mullion casement between two C18 gables with glazing bars in double-chamfered surrounds and at ground floor one 3-light casement as to first floor and two C18 sashes in surround on first floor. To basement two small 2-light chamfered mullion casements and, right, square cellar access. Off-centre left approached by flight of 7 stone steps parallel with front as 6-panel fielded door under wood moulded cornice; wrought iron balusters and handrail to steps. On return gable one 2-light casement to gable as front over 2-light without drip and at ground floor a plank door in chamfered surround and C18 sash with glazing bars. Back has 2-light mullioned casement under stopped drips at ground and first floors. The roof back slopes have original stone slates. Interior, original roof structure in pyramidal form with purlins cutting across some window openings and exposed rafters in left half. Two large open fireplaces with flat 4-centred arch lintols, chamfered stopped beams. Left of throughway is door in chamfered 4-centred opening, and the external door at the north end of the building is an original with 3 winde planks and heavy straps.
This is one of the finest more formal houses in the town.
