3/70 Bradfords Cottage

II

House; early C17, extended late C17, C18 or C19; brick-nogged timber-framing on low stone plinth, random rubble stone extension, Sussex bond brickwork to back of right-hand end; thatch roof. Six bays, 1 room deep, on slight curve; single storey, but second in roof over 2 bays only. Garden front; on left stone extension, pointed end with 4 light ovolo-moulded casement window, wall forward of next bay, boarded door in return. Two light, small pane casement, lowered with 1970's window inserted above: 2-light similar to right, glazed door under lean-to glass roof on wooden frame, c.1980. To right blocked doorway, 2-light casement window, iron opening light; beyond slight angle in wall 4-pane window, double boarded doors and wooden window. Large gable over front door, 2-light casement with weatherboard over. Roof hipped on left; brick chimney. Ridge lower on right 2 bays: gable at end. Internally left extension round large stone chimney base with semi-circular projection for oven. Stone jambs, timber lintel and mantel shelf survive to fireplace. Originally 2-bay house with upper floor, extended 1 bay on right; further 2-bay extension on right for farm purposes, now garage; single bay extension left. Front door and adjoining window reversed positions in 1970's.
