13/88 United Reformed Church

GV II

Formerly Congregational Chapel, now United Reformed Church. 1846. Ashlar face to road, English bond brick behind, with stone dressings; slate roof. Three-bay, gable to road. Symmetrical facade, moulded plinth, small octagonal clasping corner turrets in 2 stages. Door up 5 stone steps and half landing, cast-iron balusters to railings. Double wooden doors with intersecting blind tracery, 2-centred arch. Moulded surround, with crocketed ogee hoodmould. Either side a 2-light stone mullion and transom window, cinquefoiled heads to lights with quatrefoil between, ogee-shaped hoodmould with floriate finial, patterned leaded lights. Two-light mullioned window, head same pattern, in centre above door. Battlemented gable parapet rising from octagonal finials at eaves; octagonal apex finial, with pendant. Moulded string with floral plaques at intervals below. Buttressed sides, windows as front, but no hoodmould; stone dentil eaves. Sunday school added at rear. Internally panelled, timber ceiling; gallery over internal porch. (D. Verey, Gloucestershire, The Vale and the Forest of Dean, 1970.)
