Details

CHURCHDOWN CHURCHDOWN HILL SO 8819/8919 12/16 Unidentified monument in churchyard, about 10m west of south-west corner, south aisle, Church of St Bartholomew' GV II Chest tomb. Probably early C18. Stone. Flat lid, moulded edge: north side 2 bolection-moulded panels, semi-circular heads, cherubs' heads in 3 spandrels, framed by returns of ends. East end scrolls, with cherubs' heads over a skull, swags above. West end scrolls, framing sunk panel with ovolo edge, open book with crown over. South side fielded panel with laurel roll edge, drapery each side, leaf carving on returns of ends. Inscription illegible: sunk in ground.
