Details

CHURCHDOWN THE GREEN SO 8819/8919 12/22 Old School House II Former school, now small house. C17, altered late C18, late C20. Timber-framing with rendered panels, stone gable towards road, rendered gable away from road, thatched roof, stone slates to porch and dormer. Three bays, one room deep, 1½ storeys. Gable to road, rough render on stonework, ridge chimney: unrendered stone forms end of right return: timber-framing 3 panels high; tall, 2-light window almost from floor, normal height 2-light casement each side. Lean-to porch on right, boarded door facing road, irregular windows. To right original framing renewed in spindly timbers, 4- light casement, long brace from sill to stud 2 from end; original end post with brace to wall plate. Two-light casement in lean-to dormer over porch: ridge chimney right gable. All windows to right return leaded lights. Said to have been a school from 1740 to 1870. (J.J.D.
