GREAT GADDESDEN BRIDENS CAMP TL 01 SW (West side) 3/68 The Lodge, - Gaddesden Place

Gatelodge. Circa 1870 for Halsey family. Polychrome brick, Bath stone dressings, half timbering to upper parts with white brick infill, steep red tile roofs with bands of scalloped tiles. 2-storeys centre with single-storey wings N and S. Faces E onto drive by entrance gates. Centre has red brick ground floor banded in black brick, stone sills and lintels of 2-storeys canted central bay window extended as bands. Heavy wooden brackets spring from stone corbel course to support front jetty of half-timbered 1st floor. Steep faceted roof to bay. S wing has arcaded wooden recessed porch in front of boarded door and projecting chimney carried up with elaborate polychrome shaft. Rectangular 2-light bay window on S end of small projection with lean-to tiled roof on pierced brackets. Panels of encaustic tiles set in aprons of upper windows of bay. Similar recessed porch to N wing which has transomed 2-light casement and projecting N gable chimney. A coloured architect's perspective drawing of the lodge is among the estate papers at The Golden Parsonage.
