HENDERSKELFE TERRACE WALK SE 7170 (south side) 11/81 Statue of Farnese Hercules and pedestal (formerly listed under 25.1.54 "Castle Howard with Outbuilding to east and garden statues") GV TT* Statue of Farnese Hercules and the plinth on which it stands. Statue 1723 by Andrew Carpenter. Sandstone pedestal, lead statue. Pedestal 2.25 metres, statue life size. 2 steps up to pedestal with cavetto-moulded base and sunk panels bearing garlands carved in relief and egg-and-dart cornice. Statue of the Farnese Hercules, a very muscular, bearded figure, from a C3 AD copy of a Greek original, now in Museo Nationale, Naples. Haskell F and Penny N, Taste and the Antique, 1981, p 229.
