9/35 Steps, gate piers and flanking walls to Fountains Hall
GV II
Steps, gate piers and front garden wall to Fountains Hall (qv). Early C17 with later alterations and restoration. Grey and pink limestone and ashlar. Shallow flight of 7 steps with low flanking walls and round end piers. Gate piers approximately 3 metres high overall, square in section, with coupled baluster-like columns on south side and surmounted by ashlar blocks with weathered inscription left and remains of sundial right. The piers are buttressed by short flanking walls with moulded coping which are stepped down to each side and continue across garden frontage topped by a yew hedge. The wall returns towards the house on the west and east sides of the garden and is pierced by a plain gateway at the north end of the east wall. The gateway at the north end of the west wall is dated 1743 and the attached porch is C19 or C20. The gate piers appear to have been restored using masonry from elsewhere. The round end piers to the steps are reused column shafts from the Temple of Fame (Walker) and the ashlar blocks on the gate piers are similar to the plinths for the statuettes on the balustrade above the entrance to Fountains Hall (qv). The gate is C20. W T C Walker, personal communication.
