Penn House with retaining wall and stone stairs to North-east of house

- II

Town House, in considerable grounds; Middle C19. Rendered with stone dressings;
hipped slate roof with wide soffite supported by pairs of wood corbel brackets
at intervals; rendered brick chimney stacks. Two and a half storeys, the West
entrance facade is of 3-bays, the centre bay projecting. Segmental sweep of 5
steps (with middle C20 wrought iron railings) leads to pair of doors with upper
panels glazed, set in a deep hallow-chamfered semi-circular arched recess with
arch and impost mouldings, there being a cast iron radial fanlight over the
door: a blank arched recess to the left, to the right a single storey angled
stone bay window with plain sashes: to the first floor three 9-pane sash
windows, the centre being in an architrave. Parapet to centre projection, and
above 2-timber dormer windows with slightly pitched roofs. The South garden
elevation has 4-bays: the ground floor being obscured by a substantial stone
colonnaded conservatory with flat roof, the openings have semi-circular headed
arches and are part glazed: to the first floor 2-floor length semi-circular
headed 12-pane margined sashes; (one blind) on either side two 9-pane sash
windows with original sliding venetian shutters; off-centre dormer window with
two small sash windows and segmental roof. The East side has a straightforward 5
bay facade, with basement window in addition. To the North side is a middle C20
extension of little interest. The interior not inspected. To the North East of
the building a flight of stone steps with moulded stone balustrade, piers, and
return wing wall to house, included for their interest. The house understood to
have been built by Peter Daniell, a glove manufacturer and town developer.
