Pair of semi-detached houses. 1902-1905. By Parker and Unwin, for Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. Whitewashed brick with pantile roof. Living room extended by wide rectangular bay to front with direct entry to side, and scullery to rear. 2 storeys, symmetrical facade with wide central gable breaking forward, and 2 first-floor windows to each house. Small-paned windows throughout. Small 2-light windows to centre flanked by projecting bay windows with lights arranged 1:4:1, beneath hipped roof. First floor: 3-light casements to central gable flanked by 2-light casements. Hipped roof. Stacks removed. This is the only occurrence of this plan type in New Earswick. The particular significance of New Earswick lies in its contribution to the development of low cost housing in Britain. Experience gained and practices introduced here were incorporated extensively into the Tudor Walters Report of 1918 which was instrumental in the passing of the Addison Act of 1919. Plans from New Earswick influenced the Government Manual on low cost housing which followed the Act.
