15/141 Gates, walls and pavilions on the S side of Hatfield - House
GV II
Courtyard gates, walls and pavilions. The pavilions are early C17, restored c1845 when the gates and walls were built by the Second Marquess of Salisbury for the visit of Queen Victoria in 1846. Low red brick walls with trellis pattern upper halves containing V motif. Single storey corner pavilions have stone quoins and architrave bands over trellis-work windows. Stone vases to strapwork parapets. Central double gates on S side with cast iron foliage and grotesque ornament. Outer single gates in cut brick surrounds set in screen of trellised brick panels in quatrefoils. 4 red brick gate piers with stone quoins. Stone scrolled overthrow to centre gates.
