Weir on River Skell approximately 120 metres west of the Reservoir

Weir. Possibly medieval for the monks of Fountains Abbey and rebuilt after
1768 for William Aislabie. Gritstone. Approximately 1.5 metres high and 4
metres wide. Sloping ramp of coursed stones, overhanging coping of massive
blocks. Sluice on north bank of river, partly collapsed. The north bank of
the Skell was covered by orchards belonging to Fountains Abbey (qv) and
until 1768 the boundary with Studley Royal was east of the weir, on the line
of the Abbey precinct wall.
