Turnpike Lodge, circa 1850. Local stone cut, squared and coursed. Ham stone dressings; plain clay tiled roof with fish-scale bands, between coped gables. Asymmetric plan, Tudor-Gothic style. One storey with attic and two storeys, mullioned windows with labels and cast iron lattice casements, Two bays treated separately; left-hand lower; C20 bay window to ground floor replacing former entrance and bay window. Entrance now to North East. To Mudford Road a 2-storey return wing and a stepped chimney. Interior much altered. Front (North and East) boundary has low stone wall, with cast iron railings and gates, the latter with flour-de-lys finials. Said to replace earlier toll house closer to town and to have dual purpose as Stockyard gate to nearby brickworks. Originally similar to Newton Street House (Newton Lodge, Yeovil C.P., qv). Source - early photograph, Private collection.
