Market cross with sundial. Probably medieval steps; the shaft and sundial
probably C17. Gritstone: 4 tiers of square steps, the lowest approximately
3 metres wide and all made of worn blocks tied together with iron staples.
The 2-piece base to the shaft has a hollow chamfer to top; the single stone
shaft is chamfered with hollow stops to the base and keel-stops to the top.
The shaft is surmounted by a square slab carrying a cubiform block with
chamfered corners with the remains of a gnomon on each face. The sundial
was possibly erected some time after the destruction of the original cross
shaft, probably when the stocks were erected (qv). Scheduled Ancient
Monument No 418 (with Stocks).
