GV II
Stables, cart-sheds and byres, now outbuildings. Late Cl7 and earlier, with later alterations. Coursed squared pink-grey gritstone, former stables enclosing remains of timber frame, pantile roof with eaves courses of stone slates. A row of 3 buildings: a 2-storey, 3-bay former stable, 2-bay cart- shed and approximately 5-bay byre range. Stables: board doors to right of bays 1 and 2; the wide left-hand triangular-headed doorway has chamfered quoined jambs, the lintel possibly raised. The right-hand doorway is narrower, having a deeper chamfer and a 4-centred arched head. Fenestration: a small chamfered window to bay I, a 4-pane side-sliding sash centre; a 2-pane window in recessed-chamfered surround to right. A small square boarded opening under eaves, centre; a larger inserted pitching door to right. Left return: concrete steps rise to a doorway with plain surround. Interior: the rear wall, first floor, encases 2 principal posts and remains of the wall plate of timber-framed structure. The 3 roof trusses are set into the wall plate but are not linked to the posts. The trusses are of large timbers with a collar halved and dovetailed into them, linked by 2 tiers of through purlins and a ridge piece. They appear to be reused - probably from the timber-framed building on the site. Cart-shed: an open-sided shelter attached to the right gable wall of the stable; central pier. Byre range: board double doors far left, paired byre doors centre with square opening to right; board door far right. Right return: blocked doorway with chamfered quoined-jambs and shallow triangular head. The stable contains the oldest remains of a building on the site of the deserted village of High Cayton.
