Gatelodge, now a private house. Early C19 (said to have been built for
7th Earl of Bridgewater (1753-1823) towards the end of his life
(senar(1983)62) but there are drawings by Geoffry Wyatt of 'Aldbury
Lodge' on paper watermarked 1828 (Linstrum(1972)228)). Half timbered
with black exposed timbers and panelled pargetting, from moulds with
Brownlow monogram on front (coloured in 1980). Painted brick rear parts.
Steep red tile roofs. Single storey Z-plan half-timbered lodge. Oldest
part facing road on E. Central gable flanked by 2 small square towers
with separate roofs, pointed to LH and gabled to RH the base of which
is an open porch to entrance. A second gabled tower set back at RH end.
Oversailing verges at each gable have brackets to ridge, purlins and
wallplates. Central canted oriel window with tiled roof. Wooden mullions
and leaded lattice casements. Marked by OS as Crome Cottage. Said to
have been possible to open the gates from inside the lodge by means of
a wheel connected to them, (Senar(1983)62). Gates now removed on this
old road from Hemel Hempstead to Aldbury.
