22.11.66 GV II
School and almshouses, now almshouses. 1769. For Mrs Ann Hitch. Coursed gritstone, stone slate roof. 2-storey, 2-bay centre block, with flanking single-storey, 4-bay wings. Central, C20 part-glazed door with moulded surround and pulvinated frieze and cornice over. Flanking 24-pane sashes in plain surrounds. Semicircular window over with plain surround and sill band carried across to eaves level of side wings. Wings have end, panelled doors with overlights, and 24-pane sashes between doors, all with plain surrounds. Inscription above door: 'From Desire of Fulfilling to the utmost of Her Ability The Benevolent Intentions of Henry Hitch Esq. This School and Hospital was Erected and Endowed by Ann Hitch His Only Surviving Sister and Executrix. 1769.' This inscription is a modern replica, the original lying on the ground at the west end of the building. For further information see H Speight, Upper Wharfedale, London, 1900, p 123.
