5/12 Harpendenbury Farmhouse

GV II*

Farmhouse. C15 or early C16 hall house, extended 2 bays on S in
late C17. Mid-C19 cross wing added on S end. Timber frame. Red
brick casing and some exposed framing. Plain tile roof. 2
storeys: Lower cross wing on N contains hall at right angles
to main house,its N elevation with exposed curved brace and C17
external oven stack. The main elevation has 4 mid-C19 glazing-
bar sash and casement windows in flush frames. Central flush
panel door with simple hood. Large central ridge chimney stack
above door is late C17: square base with ovolo cornice; 6
diagonal square shafts. Internally this stack divides the 2 C17
bays and has rear staircase attached. Ovolo moulded floor beams.
The hall is 2 bays. Fine exposed crown post: short square post
with a stepped base and capital. Cambered tie beam. Straight
braces to collar purlin and hidden collar brace. Sooted timbers
to both bays, the part above the tie beam filled in with a later
partition. Rear wall has Wealden framing. Half-bay continuation
on front side.
