2/219 Limekiln about 100 metres North-West of Doniford Farmhouse -
- II
Limekiln. Early C19. Squared and coursed blue lias, brick relieving arches and lining to kiln bays. Plan: free standing oval kiln, 2 openings on West face, one on East, long ramp on North-East corner from the coast. Splayed, bevelled corners, moulded string course, parapet partly damageed, 2 arched openings on west front, remains of projecting walls that would have carried lean-to roof, recesses lined with brick set above 4 courses of stonework left, level of floor higher in right recess, whether intentionally or from debris deposits is unclear. Single arched opening on East wall blocked with doorway, now used as store. Ramp with low wall rising from coast to NorthEast corner, about 25 metres. The kiln is thought to have ceased production in the 1930s. Although the parapet damaged, likewise the coping of the ramp, this is an impressive structure of historical interest in a prominent site beside the beach at Doniford.
