GV II

Gatelodge to Ashridge, now a private house. Circa 1817 by Jeffry Wyatt
for Earl of Bridgewater. Limestone in chequer pattern with coursed
squared knapped flints. Yorkstone plinth slabs. Steep slate roofs. A
2-storeys L-shaped building with main range N-S and shorter wing
extending to E from S end. Polygonal 2-storeys projection at: S next SW
corner with 3 windows on each floor. Projecting parapeted square single-
storey porch at S end of W wall with Tudor arched S doorway with
battened door and narrow moulded E window. 2 windows and modern matching
door on W side, windows on each floor on E gable 2-light over 3-light.
Hollow chamfered stone mullioned windows, moulded labels to ground
floor, iron casements with lattice leaded glazing. Y-tracery to Tudor
arched upper gable windows. Crow stepped gable parapets to N and E with
splendid scroll stone finial at E. Large stone chimneys with diagonal
square shafts. Chequered stone and knapped flint wall with moulded brick
capping extends round garden on E of lodge. (Linstrum(1972)228-9).
