Details
WEAVERTHORPE WEAVERTHORPE TO SHERBURN SE 97 SE ROAD (east side) 10/76 Church of St Andrew 10.10.66 GV I Church. C12 tower, nave and chancel. Re-roofed and north wall above plinth rebuilt 1872. Restoration by G E Street for Sir Tatton Sykes. Dressed sandstone on chamfered plinth, with tiled roof. West tower; 3-bay nave and south porch; chancel. 4-stage tower and semicircular south-east vice, with slit openings. Twin round-arched bell openings on central column with cushion capital, recessed beneath round arches with plain imposts. String courses beneath belfry and plain parapet. Gabled south porch has pointed double-chamfered opening beneath headstopped hoodmould between uncarved armorial shields. Square-headed south doorway beneath semicircular tympanum containing a sundial with Latin inscription, "In honour of the Apostle St Andrew, Herbert of Winchester built this Church". Two round-headed lights east of porch and inserted pointed light with ogee-head further east. North side repeats the south side without sundial and inserted window. Chancel has square-headed priest's door. Cusped pointed window to east and later square-headed window of two ogee-headed lights further east. Similar 2- light window on north side. Square-headed, double-chamfered east window of 3 lights with reticulated tracery. Interior: tall round tower arch with plain impost with balustraded belfry opening above. Round-arched north and south doorways. Stepped semicircular chancel arch with plain imposts. Piscina and aumbry in chancel. Norman drum font with sophisticated pattern of low relief circles and octagons, some enclosing saltire crosses. South of chancel arch, a statue of St Andrew by Redfern, 1871-72. Metalwork: wrought-iron tower screen; brass and iron chancel screen (by T Potter and Son); painted iron pulpit. Splendid wrought-iron hinges to all doors. Altar-piece: painted polyptych by Clayton and Bell. Good stained glass by the same. Roofs: painted wagon roof to nave. Arch-braced, collar-beam chancel roof.
