9/146 Entrance gateway, walls and railings to The Firs and The Ledge
GV II
Entrance gateway, and walls and railiags, formerly to Moorlands (qv). C19; part of the grounds of the house designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Ham stone ashlar, wrought-iron railings. Boundary wall to The Firs (qv) in ashlar, about one metre high, with castellated top, with curved return back to the formal gateway between the two properties. The gateway has square-plan ashlar piers, with moulded and shallow-hipped tops, and pair of wrought-iron gates with staple spikes to rails, quatrefoil-band middle rails and double-curve bracing to bottom panels. The north-west and north-east boundaries to The Lodge (qv) in railings to match, with pair of gates near house, and curved corner; the braced standards having iron finials. The whole an important part of the setting to all three houses.
