2/42 Garden walls, and pier at NW corner at Gilston Park -
GV II
Garden walls. C18, reconstructed 1851 in works by P C Hardwick for John Hodgson Esq at Gilston Park (date on Gardener's Cottage at SW corner). Tall red brick walls 13.5" thick in Flemish bond. Heavy flat slate coping slabs. Taller square pier at NW corner nearest drive, with moulded stone capping and ball finial. Pilaster buttresses at intervals on inner face. Older brickwork in sandy red bricks incorporating large pebbles, and irregular vitrified headers. Sloping buttresses added on inner face of W wall. Pilasters on outer face of N wall in area where wall has been raised for C19 green houses inside. Brick courses follow the natural slope and the N and S walls are carried over a brook on round arches. Door in S wall has flat gauged arch. Gardener's Cottage much altered and not of special interest. A large rectangular walled kitchen garden, the walls reconstructed as part of the works by P C Hardwick at Gilston Park and of special interest as a late dated example of this traditional feature of the English country house.
