8/72 Old Smithy -

GV II

Farmhouse, now house. C14 or C15, remodelled C17 and late C18 with later additions and alterations. Uncoursed limestone rubble, rendered to front and gable ends; slate roof, graded to front. Original plan an open hall, probably of 3 cruck-framed bays, floored over C17 and eaves raised late C18. 2 storeys; late C20 fenestration, 3 casements directly below eaves to first floor, one to left and one to centre on ground floor with contemporary 6-panel door to right; external end stack to left has C20 rendered lean-to abutting, ridge stack to left of entrance. Interior: 2 deep-chamfered spine beams with flat heavy joists to main ground-floor room; 2 inglenook fireplaces with chamfered wooden lintels beneath ridge stack; one true cruck truss with cambered collar exposed to first bay from left and one cruck blade visible to second bay; apexes of both not inspected at time of resurvey (November 1985) but said to survive in roof space; another cruck truss is said to survive beneath render to left gable end and parts of another are believed to have been removed from right gable end.
