Details

COCKSHUTT C.P. - SJ 43 SW 9/51 Span Cottage - (formerly listed under 15.4.87 Englsh Frankton) - II Cottage, now disused. Late C17 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with painted red brick infill on chamfered red sandstone block plinth; slate roof with deep overhanging eaves. 2-cell end baffle- entry plan with slightly later byre attached to right. One storey and attic. Framing: irregular square and rectangular panels, 3 from cill to wall-plate, with long straight tension braces to right gable end and rear. Collar and tie beam end truss to right and red sandstone blocks to left gable end, which has apparently inserted integral red brick stack. Boarded door to far left and two C20 casements to left of plank door to right of centre. Late C19 or early C20 gabled eaves dormer between casements. Stable door to byre to far right with eaves hatch to left. C19 single-storey brick lean-tos to each end, right with infilled arches of former pigsties covered by C20 red brick lean-to. Rear wall has small C19 cast-iron casement to right. Interior. Left ground-floor room has chamfered spine beam and plain flat joists. Infilled stone inglenook fireplace with segmental chamfered wooden lintel. Timber framed cross wall on sandstone block plinth has wide plank door with wooden latch and pointed strap hinges to right and infilled doorway to left. Right room has chamfered spine beam with straight-cut stops and plain joists. Oak winder staircase behind plank door to right of fire- place in left room. Stepping of brick stack visible to left gable end on first floor. Wide boarded oak floor boards and chamfered single- purlin roof with central collar and tie beam truss and slightly jowled wall posts. Wall between house part and 2-bay byre has collar and tie beam truss with slightly raking struts from tie beam to principal rafters and long straight tension braces. Unusual pegged mortice and tenon joint from spine beam of right room of house into this wall. Red brick infill (bricks laid vertically on sides) probably 1866 as has painted inscription "TS/1866". Central truss and loft to right part of byre are inserted. Truss consists of 2 long raking struts from floor of hay-loft to single purlins. C19 cowstalls against back wall. Lean- to attached to left gable end has cast-iron fireplace and sink to left with furnace below.
