BRUTON CP STATION ROAD (West side) ST6834NW 8/176 The Berkeley Altar Tomb, in churchyard 9 metres South of the organ chamber, Church of Saint Mary GV II
Altar tomb. C18. Doulting stone, with marble inscription panel to West. Chamfered base step, high moulded plinth; fielded panels to three sides, marble panel flat; cornice to flat top, then step and base to urn, somewhat eroded. Latin inscription no longer complete, but the last line reads "JUSTI HONORABILIS C. BERKELEY". Sir Charles Berkeley rebuilt the chancel of Church of St Mary in 1743 - this tomb may be his. (Couzens P, Bruton in Selwood, Abbey Press, Sherborne, 1972).
