BROMYARD

815/1/242 SHERFORD STREET 12-APR-73 BROMYARD 12 (Formerly listed as: SHERFORD STREET BROMYARD 30)

GV II An C18 dwelling with later alteration, constructed in stone with a rough render and a slate roof and brick chimneystack.

PLAN: Positioned on the hill leading from the market square, the building is orientated north-south, in line with the road. The main range is rectangular in plan with outshuts to the rear.

EXTERIOR: The building is of two storeys and three bays. On the asymmetrical principal elevation there are two sashes on either storey, which are of different sizes and align neither vertically nor horizontally. There is a small casement below the eaves to the left. The top three windows are in plain reveals and interrupt the dentiled cornice. The main front door is off-centre to the right of the façade and is reached by three stone steps. It is a fielded panel door with two lights at the top. It has a simple moulded doorcase and has a pitched projecting hood. There is a second door in a plain reveal to the far left which, due to the hill, is half a storey lower. The roof is hipped at the south end, and there is a ridge stack set to the right of centre.

INTERIOR: Not inspected

HISTORY: From map evidence, it seems that No. 12 Sherford Street was built as a single dwelling and was later subdivided. There has been various historic refenestration, with openings being enlarged, added and moved. It once had directly adjacent neighbouring buildings which are no longer extant.

REASON FOR DESIGNATION: No. 12 Sherford Street, an C18 vernacular dwelling with later alteration, is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Historic: the building pre-dates the 1840 threshold * Evolution: the evolved nature of its exterior illustrates a building history common to such buildings in Bromyard, sometimes lost by conversion * Intactness: it retains its footprint and the historic structure is substantially intact * Group value: it has group value with the nearby listed buildings and makes a positive contribution to the street scene
