East Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Early C17 with later additions and alterations. Timber
framed with plaster and painted brick infill, graded slate roof.
T-plan with 2-bay gabled cross-wing projecting to left. 2 storeys with
attic to cross-wing; framing: close studding below girding beam and
3 square panels above to wall-plate (more irregular to hall range),
V-struts from collars to cross-wing; later 2-storey gabled porch to hall
range has date "RLI/1677" carved on gabled hood above door, carved splat
baluster decoration and moulded bressumer to gable; right gable end of
hall range is clad in C18 red brick (now painted), toothed floor band and
blind lozenge-shaped opening to gable; irregular fenestration, small
mid-C19 casements, one on each floor to left and right of porch and
on each floor to cross-wing; large external lateral red brick stack with
shaft re-built in C20 brick to cross-wing and similar integral stack to
back wall of hall range with painted rubblestone lean-to abutting.
Lean-to has brick bread oven projection. Interior: timber frame (square
panels and close studding) intact throughout; deep-chamfered cross beam
ceiling with heavy joists to main ground-floor room of hall range and
further deep-chamfered ceiling beams with straight-cut stops to upstairs
rooms; late C17 newel staircase with moulded handrail, pointed finials
and knobs rises to attic; several C17 plank doors with fleur-de-lys
strap hinges and massive plank and muntin front door with decorated
strap hinges; partly infilled inglenook fireplaces with chamfered
wooden lintels; roof to cross-wing of standard C17 collar and tie beam
type. Brick-lined cellar has partition wall with close-set vertical
posts. Graded II* as a complete example of a substantial C17 farmhouse
retaining several original internal features.
