Details
OAKE CP ST12NE HEATHFIELD 4/136 Blake's Cottage (previously listed under Norton Fitzwarren CP) 17.5.85 II Cottage. Late C16 early C17. enlarged C17-C18, restored late C20. Roughcast over cob and rubble, thatched roof,half hipped to left, central brick stack.Plan:possibly gable entry single cell enlarged to 2 cell,lying North-EastSouth-West.One and a half storeys,all C20 casements,2-light dormer rising from eaves right,small central stairlight window,ground floor 2 casements flanking 2 raking buttresses centre, entrance plank door end right, thatched hooded porch,single storey C20 addition right return.Interior:chamfered lintel to fireplace,stairs to left,peaked doorframe between,axial chamfered beam with step and runout stops, lateral chamfered beam in room behind stack.Upper storey not sighted, said to contain one jointed cruck, perhaps rising from ground level. Recent restoration revealed rubble piers at corners of left gable end and ajoining wooden shuttering to cob walls, possibly part of a linhay predicting enlargement of cottage.
