SJ 5223-5323 GRINSHILL C.P. HIGH STREET (North side) 17/37 Step House - GV II

House. Early to mid-C17 with C18 and early to mid-C20 alterations. Timber framed with painted brick nogging, a small part rebuilt in painted red sandstone; slate roof. Baffle-entry plan of 3 framed bays. Framing: square panels (3 from sole plate to C17 wall plate) with short straight corner braces. 2 storeys. Brick ridge stack off- centre to left and brick stack behind ridge off-centre to right. 3- window front; probably early C20 two-and 3-light leaded wooden casements, 2 oriels to first floor on brackets. Probably early C20 panelled door between first and second windows from left with small gabled porch. Exposed collar and tie-beam trusses in gable ends, both with queen struts and V-struts. Rear with painted red sandstone one-storey lean- to addition and one storey C19 wing with integral brick end stack. Interior: timber framed cross walls; chamfered beams. Large open fireplace with chamfered wooden lintel; C17 oak winder staircase at rear,adjacent to stack. The eaves have been raised at some time, probably in the C18.
