Farmhouse, now house. Early C16, considerably extended late C17 with later
additions and alterations. Red brick (mixed bond) to C17 part, late C18
red brick replacing or encasing timber frame to front of C16 part; slate
roofs with plain tiles to front roof slope of C16 part. Late C17 house
a T-plan with 2 bays of C16 house attached to right of short range. C16
part. One storey and attic. Segmental-headed leaded casement to left
with C20 gabled eaves dormer directly above. C17 panelled door to right
under C19 gabled hood. Prominent axial stone ridge stack immediately above
has moulded base and capping. Collar and tie beam end truss with projecting
single-purlin ends. C18 red brick lean-to to right gable end and rubble-
stone and brick lean-to to rear partly rebuilt late C20. Late C17 part.
2 storeys and gable-lit attic with coped verges on carved stone kneelers.
Toothed floor bands including short bands above attic windows; pilaster
strips to corners and to centre on long side of main range; chamfered plinth.
Windows mainly early C19 segmental-headed leaded casements, 2 on each floor
to long side, lower left replaced by early C20 French window; 2 windows
on each floor to front gable with one to attic. Prominent axial ridge
stack to main range has 3 attached and rebated shafts with moulded capping
and narrow projecting pilaster strips. Entrance to front in short range;
heavy boarded door with fleur-de-lys pointed strap hinges in original moulded
wood surround; narrow pointed windows to left and right. C19 red brick
lean-to in angle to rear. Interior: C17 Part. Ground-floor rooms of
main range have moulded ceiling beams with ogee stops; similar moulded beam
and flat joists to short range. Brick cellar under back room. Front
room has panelled inset wall cupboard. Framed newel staircase (probably
c.1680) rises to attic with carved splat balusters from ground to first
floor and scalloped board between closed string and handrail to flights
from first floor to attic; carved finials to newel posts. Moulded spine
and cross beams to 2 first-floor rooms in main range, back room now divided
into two. C17 plank doors throughout with fleur-de-lys strap hinges and
moulded wood surrounds; wide boarded floor boards to first floor and attic.
Arch-braced collar beam roof in 5 bays to main range, including wider central
chimney bay; double purlins. Similar roof in one bay to short range.
C16 timber frame exposed to back wall; square panels, 3 from cill
to wall-plate, with long straight tension braces. Chamfered spine beam
supporting inserted first floor. Massive stack has wooden lintels to ingle-
nook fireplaces, that to right with bread oven. Single-purlin roof with
collar and tie beam trusses, left with V-struts from collar. There is
no staircase between the ground and first floor and access to the latter
is through a plank door at the junction between the C16 and C17 parts of
the house on the first floor
