Fernhill Hall
II
Small country house. Circa 1820-30 with later additions and alterations. Sandstone ashlar; hipped slate roof with central open well and two ashlar ridge stacks to left and right of centre.
Two storeys. 1:1:1 bays, central section forming slightly projecting pedimented break; glazing bar sashes (15-paned and extending to ground on ground floor) with plain wedge lintels. Central entrance; contemporary half-glazed door under plain tetrastyle Tuscan portico with simple entablature. Left return: 1:3:1 bays, central section forming full-height canted bay, formerly surmounted by balustrade, remains of which survive in garden to south west; glazing bar sashes, those to ground floor tripartite with pedimented heads and extending to ground to outer bays and with shaped wooden window canopies to canted bay, which has contemporary French window to centre. Four glazing bar sashes on each floor to rear. Small hip-roofed brick service building, attached to right corner of entrance front, has two glazing bar sashes to front.
Interior: open-well staircase to rear right corner of entrance hall top - lit by lantern; moulded wreathed handrail and decorated cast-iron balusters continued as balustrade to first floor, with plaster frieze below. Rooms to left and right of entrance hall have decorated plaster friezes and moulded cornices. Marble fireplace to ground floor room of canted bay and marble fireplaces, some with cast-iron grates, to several first floor rooms, which also have moulded plaster cornices. Panelled doors and window shutters throughout. Back staircase of dog-leg type with turned newel-posts and stick balusters. Service buildings, formerly attached to right return, are said to have been demolished in 1930s.
