GV II*

Farmhouse. C16 - C17. Timber-frame, narrow wattle-and-daub panels between close-set studs; right hand flank wall cased in brick, tiled roofs. 3 parallel ranges of 5 framed bays presenting 3 gables to west. Cross-passage through the 2 right hand ranges from entrance in middle of right flank. In 2 parts: Left range: slightly higher and significantly wider than the other 2, asymmetrical tension braces to corner posts at first and second floor levels. Irregularly placed C19 metal casements and towards the rear of the left wall a first floor original mullioned and transomed moulded timber oriel with vertical iron bars between mullions in 8 north-facing lights; front entrance behind early C20 brick, timber-gabled extension. Centre and right ranges: matching main gables regularly placed tension braces to posts; big local- type external stack in stone with detached brick shaft. Regular fenestration: metal casements in projecting timber windows, tiled weatherings above each; front entrance via ledged door to left of centre bay; side entrance through C19 porch to right centre of right hand range. Interior: centre and right ranges: close-set chamfered beams in series of small rooms. The left range less internally divided appears to pre-date slightly the other 2 which may replace an earlier hall set at right angles to the left range. Prominent scotches to several corner posts; herringbone pattern of struts in rear gable of left range; projecting small horizontal member to right of upper window of right hand range may be a perch; apices of 2 right hand gables have carved pendants similar to those of left gable. The building was used as a country residence and hunting lodge by the Bishops of Hereford (RCHM; a map of the footpaths and parish of Colwall, Colwall Parish Council).
