SU 73 NW CHAWTON WINCHESTER ROAD 2/6 The Dower House
GV II
House. C18, early C19, and c1900. Rendered walls, half-timbered jettied 1st floor on side brackets. Steep tile roof, gable tile-hung with scalloped bands. Building of several phases; a small C18 L-shaped house, with a larger block (at right-angles to the roadway) of the early C19, with extensions and alterations in the Art and Craft manner. South front: formerly symmetrical, of 2 storeys, 3 windows, but the west side has been given a jettied gable. 2 early C19 upper sashes, the other windows being mullioned and transomed casements (including a rectangular bay below the jetty). Tuscan open porch of stone, 2 columns and simplified mouldings, with a reeded doorframe, enclosing a fanlight and 6-panelled door. The west elevation (to the street) shows the oldest part, with painted brickwork, casements. The south side has a gable and 2 sashes. There are substantial extensions, filling in the earlier L- shape, with tile-hung gables, painted brick walls, and casements, and traditional doors.
