A cottage of late-C17 or early-C18 date with late-C20 and C21 additions and alterations. The original building is of one and a half storeys with a two cell plan. The building is timber-framed with a stone stack to the S gable end and a roof of asbestos tiles. The entrance is from the N gable end.
EXTERIOR: Both flanks have six by three cells of small framing with C20 one and two-light casements to the ground floor. To the E side is a two-light, C20 dormer with flat head. The S gable end has a rubble stone chimney stack to right of centre with offsets and a square brick chimney. The walling to left of this has been rebuilt and timber planks applied in imitation of framing. The N gable end is masked by a C21 two-storey addition with lower ridge which projects to the N and E of the original cottage and is rendered and colour-washed.
INTERIOR: The ground cill is evident in both ground floor rooms and both have a chamfered, axial ceiling beam supporting widely-spaced joists. The partition wall is small framed. The fireplace bressumer and staircase are C20. To the first floor the heads of the jowled corner posts are apparent and small framing to the outer walls. The ridge and purlins are evident, and the central dividing wall with tie and collar beams and central doorway, with angled braces to the apex.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION Pikestye Cottage, Marden, Herefordshire is listed for the following principal reasons: * Pykestye Cottage (C17) is a good example of a small cottage reflecting local vernacular traditions. * It retains much of its historic framing.
