National School and railings. Dated 1869. Rubble, Welsh slate roof.
2-storey school with 4-stage tower porch, 3:1:3 bays. Hammer-faced quoins.
School; ground floor: C20 casement windows. First floor: pointed-arched
windows, single lancets flanking central 3-light windows with tracery below
quoined gables containing blank loop-holes. Kneelers, ashlar copings, end
stacks. Tower: single lancets to first and second stages; on fourth a blank
loop-hole; on second a plaque describing the building of the school as a
memorial to Rev J A Birch, late Rector of Middleham. Entrance on right
return of tower, a board door in ashlar surround on plinths with cornice
capitals and 4-centred arch head. Railings in front of school to right of
tower: ashlar plinth supporting cast-iron railings with spear finials, urn
finials to standards, ashlar gate-piers.
