3/4 Thatchwell Cottage

II

Cottage, once a pair replacing 4. C17, altered and reclad in the early C19; C20 rear wing. Exterior of brickwork, with part-tiled part-thatched roof. Of timber framed origin, but with altered (and again altered) exterior. Front (east) of 1 storey and attic, 3 above 4 windows. ½-hipped thatch roof, with eyebrow dormers. Walls mainly of English bond, one cambered opening, cement plinth, and alterations indicating that the early C19 4 door arrangement are now changes to doorway 1 window and 2 filled openings. Casements, some leaded lights and 1 cast-iron frame, other C20 steel casements. Boarded door in a plain frame, within a shallow brick porch, with a gabled tile roof. The rear (west) elevation is irregular, the lower ½ of the roof is tiled and has 2 dormers; the walls are mixed, with English and Flemish bonds, some flint panels, and stretchers to the wing. The north gable has exposed framing, and the lower walls contains bands of flint.
