DOWNHOLME A 6108 SE 19 NW (west side) 4/13 Church of Saint Michael and All Angels 4.2.69 II* GV
Church. C12, C13, C14, C15 with C19 restorations. Rubble with ashlar dressings, artificial slate roof. Nave with north aisle and south porch, chancel with north aisle. Porch: probably 1811. Round-arched opening with ashlar voussoirs, imposts and keystone. Shaped kneelers, ashlar coping with gable cross. Inside, medieval grave cover with a stepped cross with foliate head and shears. Nave: c.1180. 3 bays. South doorway: Romanesque, with one chevroned order. Round-arched window of 1811 with imposts and keystone with 2 segmental-arched lights and roundel in tympanum. Tall C15 rectangular window, probably for rood gallery. Corbel table with modillions. Gable parapets. Corniced bellcote at west end. Gable cross at east end. West end nave: diagonal buttress to right. Lancet window with C14 Decorated tracery, and C19 label with heads. West end north aisle: C19 2-light Early English-style window. North aisle: C13. C15 square window in chamfered surround; stepped buttress; 2-light window with trefoiled heads and trefoil above in plate tracery, label with heads; stepped buttress; blocked north doorway with pointed arch, imposts and chamfered label. Chancel: early C14. 2 bays. Shouldered lintel to priest's doorway. 2 C19 2-light windows in Decorated-style with labels with heads. Corbel table with modillions. Gable parapet to east, with C19 Gothic chimney at apex. Chancel east end: stepped buttresses. C14 3-light window with reticulated tracery. Interior: early C13 nave arcade of 2 plain orders on circular piers on tall bases with hollow-moulded capitals. C13 chancel arch of 2 chamfered orders with nailhead ornament on abaci of mutilated capitals. Arch to north chapel slightly chamfered with broach stops. Piscina with pointed arch. Two corbels for images flanking east window. C12 octagonal font with cable moulding around rim and with C19 Perpendicular-style armorial shields around bowl, on C19 stem. 2 hatchments of Hutton family. George III coat of arms. Vcll i, pp. 230-1.
