Details
MELBECKS GUNNERSIDE SD 99 NW 14/88 Gunnerside New Bridge - II Bridge. Early 1830s. Rubble. 2 arches, semi-circular to south, segmental to north with voussoirs and central cutwater. Crude string below parapet with rock-faced coping. Built by Edward Broderick of Spring End to relieve unemployment caused by depression in the lead- mining industry. Work was in progress in 1835. The bridge was repeatedly rebuilt after being washed away by floods in C19. M Batty, Gunnerside Chapel and Gunnerside Folk, 1967.
