THORALBY SWINACOTE SD 98 NE 1/125 Swinacote - II

Farmhouse, now house. Dated 1704. Rubble, stone slate roof. Through- passage plan, 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Quoins. Between first and second windows C20 pent-roofed porch has timber 3-light mullion window and glazed door in right return. In first bay: 3-light mullion windows, chamfered on ground floor, partly chamfered and partly double-chamfered on first floor. On ground floor in second and third bays, 3- and 4-light flat- faced mullion windows with dripmoulds. On first floor in second and third bays, 3-light double-chamfered mullion windows. Stacks at ends, and older stack between second and third bays. Outbuilding to left, not of special interest. Rear: C20 porch has original inner door with ashlar surround with roll moulding on arris, triangular soffit to lintel, and inscription "IR 1704" on lintel. Interior: in central ground-floor room, ashlar fireplace with double-cyma corbels supporting lintel and inserted C19 Carron cast-iron kitchen range. Stone stairs along front wall in front room to left. North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study Group Report No 113.
