THORALBY TOWN HEAD SD 98 NE 1/127 Old Hall (formerly listed as Town Head) 25.3.69 - II*

Manor house, now house. Dated 1641. Rubble, stone slate roofs. Double- depth plan, 2 storeys, 1:1:1 bays. Quoins. Central 2-storey gabled porch: quoins, one to right with graffiti "AB" and "IW"; 6-panel door with L hinges in ashlar chamfered quoined surround with wave moulding on arris.and graffito "FW" on right jamb, Tudor-arched head with letters "I" and "W" in spandrels and on lintel recessed panel with raised characters "ANO DOM 1641" and decorative motifs, hoodmould; first-floor 2-light double-chamfered mullion window, the inner chamfer hollow; ovolo-shaped kneelers, moulded ashlar coping with obelisk finials; on left return, ground-floor double- chamfered single-light window. Inside porch: flag floor; left window has Tudor-arched head; inner door of 6 fielded panels and butterfly hinges in stop-chamfered Tudor-arched ashlar surround with interrupted jambs. First bay: ground-floor C20 three-light double-chamfered mullion window; first- floor double-chamfered single-light window. Third bay: ground-floor 4-light mullion window; first-floor 3-light mullion window, both double-chamfered and with hollow inner chamfer, and with masons marks to that on the first floor. Ovolo-shaped kneelers, moulded ashlar coping with obelisk finials; corniced ashlar end stacks. Left return: on ground floor, 5-light hollow- moulded chamfered mullion window and 4-light double-chamfered mullion window with central king mullion, partly C20, the 2 joined by continuous hoodmould; on first floor, two 5-light hollow-moulded chamfered mullion windows, each with hoodmould; two gables, each with hollow-chamfered single-light window with stanchion; ovolo kneelers, smaller at central valley, moulded ashlar coping with obelisk finials, corniced ashlar gable stacks. Right return: on ground floor, chamfered fire window and 2-light hollow-chamfered mullion window to left; board door in inserted opening, and 3-light chamfered mullion window to right; on first floor, 2-light double-chamfered mullion window to left, 3-light hollow-chamfered mullion window to right; 2 gables with ovolo kneelers in centre and with bird's mouth profile to right, moulded ashlar coping to left and slab coping to right, corniced ashlar gable stacks. Interior: in ground-floor room to left, ashlar fireplace with stopped moulded arris and Tudor-arched head with rosettes in spandrels and with door of 6 fielded panels in chamfered surround to its right; in partition wall, paired doorways, chamfered, still with iron crooks and snecks, which opened different ways, one perhaps to former spiral staircase. In kitchen, to right, inglenook fireplace with stop-chamfered segmental arch with masons' marks and fire window in rear wall; chamfered beams and joists, some of latter moulded. Several windows have masons' marks, which correspond with those at Dale Foot (qv) in Bishopdale. Some oak butt- jointed floor boards on first floor.
