GV II

Public house. Late C16 with mid- to late C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Timber-framed with rendered infill, some weatherboarding and painted brick additions. Plain tiled roof with C19 brick ridge stack and end stacks. Three framed bays aligned north-east/south-west with central chimney. Three storeys. Framing: mainly five panels from sill to wall-plate. Front elevation has six rows of panels at first and second floor level with partly cusped con- cave lozenge decoration. Collar and tie-beam trusses with struts visible at gable ends. Roof raised to accommodate second storey. South-east front elevation: windows are all leaded casements. There are three first floor and three second floor 3-light windows. Ground floor has flat-roofed C19 addition with narrow pilasters flanking an 8-light window to the left and a 3-light window and a canted bay window to the right, of a central round-headed archway. This leads to a small lobby with doorways at each side. Above the archway is an ornate cast iron bracket supporting an octagonal lantern. Substantial additions at rear. Interior has been altered in conversion to hotel. (VCH IV, p 363; BoE, p 279).
