COTTON MENDLESHAM ROAD TM 06 NE 2/20 The Cottage -

GV II Originally one house, now 2. C15 or early C16 with C19 addition set back to right. Dwelling to right, comprising service end of C16 house and the C19 addition, renovated c.1985. Timber framed; old plasterwork to left, pargetted panelled render of c.1985 to right; a little exposed framing in right end wall. C19 work in clay lump, similarly rendered. Thatched roof, half-hipped to right; C19 work pantiled. 2 cells, a possible 3rd cell to left lost. 2 storeys with small attic. Small-paned casement windows of C19 and mid C20. Left hand house has C19 plank door in original cross-entry. 2 mid C20 battened plank doors to right. Internal stack with small red brick shaft; later stack to right, at junction with C19 addition. Interior. Service cell has widely-spaced studding with tension braces. Partition wall with hall retains 4-centre arched doorways. Joists reinstated in different positions. Probable crown-post roof, the collars and any collar purlin missing over the service end. Interior of left hand house not examined.
