Details
WITHYHAM GROOMBRIDGE 1. 5208 Penns-in-the Rocks TQ 53 SW 13/170 26.11.53 II* 2. The core of the house was built about 1700 by William Penn of Pennsylvania and his wife Guilelma Springett, of whose estate is formed part. The south or main front was built by William Penn IV about 1737. Two storeys and attic. Seven windows. Four dormers. Red brick. Tiled roof. Windows in architrave surrounds with keystones over and glazing bars intact. The centre portion of five window bays projects slightly. The flanking portions of one window each were originally of one storey but were heightened in 1830. Long and short stone quoins to each section. Rusticated stone doorway with keystone. Door of six fielded panels. The centre of the north or entrance front dates from 1700. The projecting wings, which make it half-H shaped were added by Stephen Beeching in 1830.
